SuLei Cellars 2019 Albariño

Appellation: Yakima Valley

Crawford Vineyard has become a prized site throughout the Northwest for Albariño, and this grape native to the Iberian Peninsula continues to reward winemakers with gold medals. This spring, it emerged from the Cascadia International Wine Competition with a best-of-class award and then Best White Wine honors. Tanya Woodley, an alum of Walla Walla Community College’s program, preserves the variety’s natural crispness by keeping it away from oak and steering clear of malolactic fermentation. As a result, tangerine, Key lime pie and river grass greet the nose. Medium-bodied, it is light on its feet as it dances across the palate, bringing bright peach, orange peel and herbs, which linger for a satisfying finish. One judge described the wine as “like a walk along the Columbia River with the wildflowers in bloom — fresh and pretty.” Woodley and co-owner Elaine Jomwe operate tasting rooms on both sides of the Cascades, in Walla Walla near the stateline and in downtown Vancouver USA – Woodley’s hometown.

Food pairings: As with Pinot Gris, think of the sea, which includes mussels, linguini in clam sauce and fish tacos as well as pork, chicken, risotto and Eggs Benedict.
