Appellation: Horse Heaven Hills
Alaska transplant JD Nolan and his family own and operate Fat Olives Restaurant and Catering in Richland, Wash., and they’ve developed a remarkable house wine program thanks to relationships with two of the Columbia Valley’s most prominent winemaking families — the Hedges on Red Mountain and the Mercers in the Horse Heaven Hills. Recently, it’s been fascinating to see how their two Cabernet Sauvignons battle it out for top honors in West Coast wine competitions. Two years ago, the Schooler Nolan 2015 Red Mountain Cab earned a double gold medal at the Cascadia International Wine Competition. Last year, the 2016 Horse Heaven Hills Cab was best of class at the Cascadia. This year, the 2017 HHH by Mercer winemaker Jeremy Santo earned the Nolans yet another gold medal from the Cascadia. Dark cherry and dusty herbs and a hint of vanilla oak fill in the aromatics. The palate is loaded with more dark cherry, black raspberry coffee and chocolate. Soft and well-integrated tannins finish the wine deliciously. At this price, this Cab is a true bargain, and it is available to purchase by the bottle and by the case at Fat Olives, which is across the street from the iconic Spudnut Shop at the Uptown.
