Wine of the Week

Owen Roe 2016 Red Willow Vineyard Chapel Block Syrah

Appellation: Yakima Valley

Owen Roe’s work with historic Red Willow Vineyard is following in the footsteps of the late David Lake, who encouraged Mike Sauer to be the first in Washington to plant Syrah in 1986. Three decades later, David O’Reilly continues to pay homage in delicious fashion. Its charming nose and dark complexion of blackberry and blueberry offers verve, lusciousness and pleasing balance. This earned a rating of “Outstanding!” — the equivalent of a gold medal — during Wine Press Northwest magazine’s tasting of 169 versions of Syrah earlier this year. Fortunately, Sauer plans to expand his plantings of Syrah in 2021. O’Reilly recently sold Owen Roe to Vintage Wine Estates, but by all accounts, the brand is in ideal hands with VWE founder/CEO Pat Roney and his team in charge.
