Wine of the Week

Upper Five Vineyard 2016 Syrah

Appellation: Rogue Valley

A former sommelier in Portland, John Grochau learned winemaking at the elbow of Doug Tunnell of Brick House fame. Here, he works with Demeter-certified estate fruit grown by Upper Five owners Terry Sullivan and Molly Morrison near the Southern Oregon town of Talent. At 1,900 feet above sea level, this ranks among the Northwest’s highest-elevation sites west of Idaho. The light touch by Grochau allows for a remarkably pure expression of fruit as currant and black cherry come with peppered bacon, sublime tannins and touch of cocoa in the finish. This earned a rating of “Outstanding!” — the equivalent of a gold medal — during Wine Press Northwest magazine’s tasting of 169 versions of Syrah earlier this year.
