Appellation: Horse Heaven Hills
Washington State University product Jeremy Santo grew up in Prosser, Wash., and he’s back home leading the winemaking for the Mercer brothers. In 2018, they launched this tier in partnership with the Napa-based Delicato family. This blend led by Merlot (39%), Syrah (31%) and Malbec (16%) is a great example of the remarkable values resulting from the expansive Mercer plantings north of Crow Butte Park and the Columbia River. Black and blue fruit, cocoa powder and orange zest go on to reveal blackberry and blueberry flavors. It’s a big wine, but the Syrah not only builds tremendous mouth feel but also brings some leather and cinnamon to the finish. This blend earned a gold medal at the Savor NW Wine Awards on the Oregon Coast on its way to a unanimous vote of Platinum — making it Double Platinum — during the 20th annual Platinum Judging staged by Wine Press Northwest.
