Wine of the Week

Helix by Reininger 2016 Phinny Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Appellation: Horse Heaven Hills

Chuck Reininger created the Helix label in 2002 to preserve the Walla Walla Valley focus of his eponymous brand, and the former Mount Rainier climbing guide deliciously explores Phinny Hill Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills as an ongoing tribute to beloved viticulturist Dick Beightol. The inclusion of Petit Verdot (7 percent) provides another dimension to the complex theme of black cherry and blueberry as cedar, chocolate mint and licorice splash about the nicely managed tannins. Reininger is the only winemaker since 2005 who has been granted access to this particular 5-acre parcel near famed Champoux Vineyard, and his experience with this fruit shows. Last fall, it earned a unanimous vote for Platinum during the 20th Platinum Judging, having earned its way into the competition via a double gold medal at the 2019 Seattle Wine Awards.

Rated “Double Platinum” by Wine Press Northwest magazine. (13.9 percent alc.)
