Appellation: Columbia Valley
Best Buy! To those who say Americans don’t like sweet Riesling, Bob Bertheau would politely disagree. So would fans of his Harvest Select, a program developed a decade ago to slot in just a bit sweeter than the Columbia Valley Riesling. On the International Riesling Foundation’s Taste Profile scale, this is listed as “medium-sweet.” And yet it comes across as far from cloying and not necessarily indicative of the 4.5% residual sugar because of the lingering lemon/lime acidity to balance the theme of Ambrosia fruit salad. Bertheau, who grew up in Seattle and graduated from Boise State before making wine in California, describes the Harvest Select as “a bowl of fruit in a glass.” It ranked among the top “Outstanding!” entrants in Wine Press Northwest magazine’s recent judging of Riesling for the Summer 2019 issue. In the scope of that tasting, it should be the easiest to find.
Rated “Outstanding!” by Wine Press Northwest. (10.5% alc.)
