Appellation: Columbia Valley
The Gunselmans, owners of this Spokane, Wash., winery, don't feel the need to hurry their work, exemplified by leaving this in 95% new oak for 26 months. And the Horse Heaven Hills production, part of its estate, leads with cherry wood embers, black cherries, chocolate, vanilla and mocha aromas. Black plum flavors, joined by juicy cherries and cranberries, make this an opulent offering that's nearly absent of tannin. Thankfully, they haven't increased the price, but they have boosted production by nearly 50%. Rated "Outstanding" by Wine Press Northwest magazine.
Price: $29.
Cases produced: 725 cases. Look for this in wine shops or order directly from the winery.
Food matches: Pair this with grilled meat topped with a mushroom sauce.
