His job is to ensure the judgings are run fairly - and he does it all as a volunteer. Rick Small comes from a farming family in the Walla Walla Valley, and he began planting wine grapes on his property in the northwest corner of the appellation in the 1970s. In 1981, he launched Woodward Canyon Winery in the town of Lowden, and his Cabernet Sauvignons are considered some of the best in the United States.
