DAMA Wines 2015 Cabernet Franc

May 11, 2019

Appellation: Walla Walla Valley

Mary Derby’s downtown Walla Walla tasting room showcases these three barrels of fruit from the Rempel family’s XL Vineyard, which is part of the star-studded SeVein project near Milton-Freewater, Ore. This bottling denotes Derby's first dedicated effort with Cabernet Franc, and she nailed it. (She now also produces a Cabernet Franc rosé.) Derby preserves classic notes of a cedar-lined cigar box followed by dusty raspberries and cherries with balanced tannins and touches of Graham cracker and coffee. Her eyecatching label was designed by Amy Mundwiler, wine director for Chicago's Maple & Ash Restaurant. Ironically, Mundwiler's "ah-hah" moment with wine came with a bottle of Cabernet Franc from Chinon. Derby’s ranked as one of the top examples of Cabernet Franc in Wine Press Northwest magazine’s recent “Bordeaux Gems” tasting for the Spring 2019 issue.
