Owen Roe Winery 2017 Ex Umbris Syrah

December 1, 2018

Appellation: Yakima Valley

David O'Reilly, among the Northwest's most influential, affable and talented winemakers, continues to produce one of the region's premier values for Syrah. He began in Oregon and still makes much of his cool-climate wines in the Willamette Valley. In 2013, he planted a flag in the Yakima Valley, building his home, a winery and a tasting room near Union Gap. Surrounding his Gangl Road project are young vines. Impeccable sources for this bargain Syrah include DuBrul Vineyard of Côte Bonneville fame and historic Red Willow Vineyard. Aromas of blueberry and leather delight the senses while the palate delivers a powerful mix of fruit and earthiness amid a beautiful brightness and smooth, silky texture. The balance of aroma, flavor and structure is stellar. Two years ago this week, we selected the 2014 Ex Umbris as our Wine of the Week. Earlier this fall, the fresh 2017 Ex Umbris earned best of class at the Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition in Hood River, Ore. And fortunately, O'Reilly's team in Union Gap, led by Jacki Evans, has doubled production of Ex Umbris during the past three vintages.
