Maryhill Winery 2014 Proprietor’s Reserve Grenache

February 10, 2018

Appellation: Columbia Valley

In recent vintages, this juicy red Rhône grape ranks among the most coveted varieties in Washington, and New Zealand native Richard Batchelor topped the 2017 Platinum Juding field of eight qualifying Grenache bottlings. Art den Hoed’s planting in the Yakima Valley was blended with Gunkel Vineyard near the winery at Maryhill, and it’s remarkably expressive. Wild berries and plums aromas are joined by smoky bacon fat and espresso. On the palate, it’s red and juicy as currants, dried Montmorency cherry and pomegranate bookend the midpalate of sweet spice cake. It received a rare unanimous Double Platinum. Fortunately, it's one of the Northwest's largest bottlings of Grenache.
