Locati Cellars 2009 Estate Sangiovese

April 17, 2013

Appellation: Walla Walla Valley

The Locati family has been farming the Walla Walla Valley for more than a century and is most famous for its involvement in developing the region's sweet onion industry. Now the family is growing wine grapes and has a tasting room in the lobby of the Marcus Whitman Hotel in downtown Walla Walla. A bit of strawberry and red currant with some vanilla open the aromatics for this red, and the same fruit prevails on the palate with an added bit of red raspberry, spice and medium dark chocolate leading to a twist of pepper in the finish. This won a gold medal at the 2013 Great Northwest Wine Competition. Alcohol: 13.9 percent.

Price: $28.

Cases produced: 225 cases.

Food matches: Lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs and grilled lean meats are all great choices for this delicious red wine.
