A Grandview winery with tasting rooms in Kennewick and Woodinville won best in show Saturday evening at the 33rd annual Tri-Cities Wine Festival.
Smasne Cellars’ 2007 Block #3 Syrah, a $35 wine, earned a unanimous double gold and best in show from the professional judging panel. The winery is owned and operated by Robert Smasne, whose family has farmed in the Yakima Valley for decades. Smasne opened a tasting room in the Southridge area of Kennewick this year. The grapes for Smasne’s award-winning wine came from Lawrence Vineyard in the Frenchman Hills near Royal City.
The competition included wines from Washington, Oregon and Idaho. The results were revealed at the Gala Tasting on Saturday evening at the Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick.
Basalt Cellars in Clarkston won gold and best of variety for its 2007 Merlot, while Kiona Vineyards Winery on Red Mountain won gold and best of variety for its 2010 Dry Riesling. Winning best of class and gold medals were Pend d'Oreille Winery in Sandpoint, Idaho, for its 2008 Bistro Rouge (made with Washington grapes) and Upland Estates in Sunnyside for its 2008 Teunis, a red blend also made by Smasne.
