Angel Vine 2008 Stonetree Vineyard Zinfandel
Appellation: Columbia Valley
Ed Fus grows Pinot Noir in Oregon's Eola-Amity Hills, but his primary passion and pursuit remains Zinfandel, and he's finding success in various places. Here, it's Tedd Wildman's site on the Wahluke Slope that helps make for mouthwatering piquant aromas of raspberry, cherry, cranberry, peppered beef jerky, tar and anise. It's a razzy and very cherry drink with zesty pomegranate acidity, pink peppercorn and chocolaty tannins. Rated "Outstanding" by Wine Press Northwest magazine.
Price: $20.
Cases produced: 75 cases.
Food matches: Pair this with a meaty lasagna or grilled steaks.
Angel Vine, 258 N. Kutch St., Carlton, OR 97111, 503-969-7209, www.angelvine.net.

More about Angel Vine
Ed Fus' first name for his Carlton, Ore., winery was Three Angels, named for his wife and daughters. One trademark dispute later, the new name is Angel Vine.
Despite being located in the heart of Pinot Noir, Fus focuses on Zinfandel and Primitivo, all grown in top Washington vineyards.
Walla Walla wine executive resigns
Elizabeth Martin-Calder, executive director of the Walla Walla Wine Alliance, abruptly resigned last week after leading Washington's best-known wine-tasting region for four years.

Washington Wine Month

Yakima Valley restaurant serious about getting local
My wife and I enjoyed a great meal last weekend at Picazo717 in Prosser, Wash. One of my favorite moments was when I noticed the corkage fee is $15 - but $25 if you bring a California wine in. That's called being dedicated to local producers!
'Bargain' Bob sniffs out some great wines
It's Christmas in August for 'Bargain' Bob Woehler, who loves Washington Wine Month at the state liquor store. He dedicates this week's podcast to some of the wines he'll be purchasing on sale.

Where in NW Wine Country
Most of you had little problem with last week's mystery photo.
A vast majority of you - 78% - recognized the photo as showing Arbor Crest Wine Cellars in Spokane, Wash., while just 14% thought it was Summerhill Pyramid Winery in Kelowna, B.C. Almost nobody guessed it was either Ste. Chapelle in Caldwell, Idaho, or Domaine Serene in Dayton, Ore.
This week's photo was found on flickr.com (credit: Ethan Prater).
