Woehler on Wine: Martin-Scott Winery

Martin-Scott, a small family-owned winery on the hills above East Wenatchee, offers an impressive view and wines to match.

The winery, with its vines and flowers, is a picturesque setting to sip and enjoy wines or a picnic.

It's a true family venture. Mike Scott makes the wine with help from his wife Judi, sons Tim and Chris and daughter-in-law Becky.

Mike says he hopes to keep the winery fairly small to ensure quality and keep the focus on having fun.

"I truly enjoy sharing wines with friends and allowing the fruits of our labor to be a part of celebrations," he said.

Martin-Scott Winery gets it fruit from the home vineyard in East Wenatchee, high on a bluff, south-facing, above the Columbia River and from grapes grown near Mattawa.

The wines have been under the radar, but the North Central Washington area that stretches from Wenatchee to Chelan is beginning to emerge as a prime spot for wine tourists.

I recently tasted six Martin-Scott wines with Wine Press Northwest, which recommended six wines — finding two of them as "Excellent" and one of them "Outstanding!" Besides those six, I've added two more to consider.

2007 Malbec, Columbia Valley, $24 -- Rated "Outstanding!" by Wine Press Northwest. Inviting oak aromas, big berry flavors and smooth, lush tannins. Try it with New York steak.

2007 Riesling, Columbia Valley, $12 -- Rated "excellent" by Wine Press Northwest. Spice, citrus and mango describe this easy sipper. Great with your upcoming Easter brunch.

2007 Sangiovese, Columbia Valley, $24 -- Rated "excellent" by Wine Press Northwest. Coffee and a hint of licorice and then tasty strawberry jam flavors. Serve this Italian red with manicotti with red sauce.

2006 Merlot, Columbia Valley, $24 -- Extremely smooth and balanced from the oak beginning to the blackberry middle and end. Try it with pizza.

2008 Pinot Gris, Columbia Valley, $14 -- Sweet entry with Fuji apple flavors followed by fresh orange juice flavors. Match with apple crisp.

2007 Pinot Noir, Columbia Valley, $22 -- A very good Washington Pinot showing earth, cherries and chocolate with flavors that grow on you. Serve with smoked salmon.

2007 Raven Ridge Red, Columbia Valley, $22 -- This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah opens with smoky oak, followed by balanced blueberry flavors. A good stew goes here.

2007 Gewürztraminer, Columbia Valley, $13 -- This one opens with grapefruit aromas and flavors, plus some lychee nut. It's a bit soft and a good cocktail wine.
