Idaho winery takes dent out of waste with refillable bottles

Pend d'Oreille Winery in Sandpoint, Idaho, is doing its part to reduce waste by offering its popular Bistro Rouge red blend in refillable 1.5 liter bottles.

Since starting the program a year ago, co-owner Julie Meyer estimates it has kept 3.5 tons of solid waste out of landfills. Meyer said she was frustrated with the lack of glass recycling in the Sandpoint, so she and the staff at the winery came up with the idea for a refillable magnum bottle.

When first purchased, the bottle of wine costs $25, and refills are $16, dropping the cost per 750ml bottle to $8.

The Bistro Rouge is a favorite wine at Pend d'Oreill Winery. A glance at Wine Press Northwest's wine reviews reveals the Bistro Rouge often earns our top "Outstanding" rating.
