KENNEWICK -- Kennewick has joined the Northwest's winery boom, with three tasting rooms in a row emerging in the Southridge neighborhood.
Canyon's Edge Winery has opened a new tasting room just off Highway 395 at 36th Avenue, where the Kennewick Farmers Market is to move this spring.
Adding the market would complement the three tasting rooms. Already sited there are the Anelare tasting studio and the Ava Wine Room and Bottle Shop, named to play off the term American Viticultural Area (AVA).
Tri-City wine lovers have envied what Prosser has achieved with its Vintner's Village, where several wine tasting rooms are bunched together, with many featuring light food fare.
The Ava Wine Room offers wine by the glass or bottle, plus snacks and some local beers.
Anelare tasting studio is a bit different, operating as a winery club where members can enjoy the wines made by Canon De Sol winemaker Victor Cruz. Nonmembers also can sample some of the wines for a fee.
Canyon's Edge is a more traditional operation, with its vineyards in the western reaches of the Horse Heaven Hills and two tasting rooms, one in Prosser and the other at Southridge Village. John Haw, formerly of Maryhill Winery, is the winemaker.
Its new Kennewick tasting room features a tasting bar and a room with soft couches where folks can enjoy wine, tapas and often evening programs with speakers or light entertainment.
The blog for Canyon's Edge is one of the more active in the Northwest wine industry.
Some of the selected wines offered include:
Canyon's Edge 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, $24 -- Fruit forward with aromas and flavors of dark cherries, sweet oak and spices. Try it with top sirloin steak.
Canyon's Edge 2006 Sagebrush Red, Horse Heaven Hills, $18 -- A red blend offering blackberries, a big body and lingering finish. Serve it with thin-sliced roast beef on a bun.
Canyon's Edge 2005 Syrah, Horse Heaven Hills, $18 -- An intense Syrah loaded with berry jam, black pepper and plum characteristics. Try it with an Italian-style meatloaf.
Canyon's Edge 2005 Merlot, Horse Heaven Hills, $20 -- Think smooth and tasty with marionberries and vanilla oak. Any kind of lamb dish will do.
Canyon's Edge 2008 Sauvignon Blanc, Horse Heaven Hills, $14 -- A crisp mix of citrus components, including grapefruit, lemon and limes. Match it with finger-size cocktail prawns.
