  • It has long been rumored that the few rows of vines at the entrance to Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville, Wash., were required so the winery could be called a "chateau."

Woehler on Wine: Alexandria Nicole Cellars

Even though I'm in my 70s, I still can enjoy a little "Roll in the Hay."

Now don't jump to a conclusion. That's the name of one of Alexandria Nicole Cellars' wines from "The Girl Next Door" series. Yep, it's "Roll in the Hay" Chardonnay.

The 2006 version is an attention grabber not just because of its name or the captivating farm gal on the label, but rather the wine.

The wine has gained a lot of notoriety on Web sites, including Flickr, where folks post photographs and then others comment on them.

Quite a feat for Jarrod Boyle, winemaker and guiding light behind Alexandria Nicole Cellars of Prosser, Horse Heaven Hills and Woodinville.

I know Roll in the Hay Chardonnay really grabbed my attention, and it was for the fetching label and the outstanding wine inside.

Here's what Wine Press Northwest had to say about the wine. "It's 100 percent barrel-fermented yet is fruit forward and balanced with aromas of facial powder, apples and Bosc pear backed by mouth-watering acidity. Furthermore it sells for $14."

You can order the wine for pickup through their Prosser tasting room at 509-786-3497 or taste and buy it at their production facility near Paterson at mile marker 155 on Highway 14. The number there is 509-832-3497. Both facilities are open Thursday through Monday.

Alexandria Nicole also makes several other wines I liked that are in my $20 and under price range.

2006 The Girl Next Door Oo oo la la Syrah, Columbia Valley $14 -- Personally, I would have liked a few more oo oo's, but it still has some nice plum jam stuff. Try it with tri-tip marinated in the wine.

2007 Alexandria Nicole Back Room rosé, Horse Heaven Hills, $14 -- A crisp rosé made from Cabernet Franc with floral aromas and light berry flavors. Take it on a picnic and serve with cold fried chicken breasts.

2008 Alexandria Nicole Steel Sauvignon Blanc, Horse Heaven Hills, $18 -- Grassy and citrus aromas with apple flavors. Food friendly, it will match with any simple seafood dish.

2008 Alexandria Nicole late harvest Riesling, Horse Heaven Hills, $16 -- Just right on the sweetness. Aromas of apricots and flavors of a sweet crisp apple. Serve it with mild cheese and fruit.

2007 Alexandria Nicole Quarry Butte red wine, Horse Heaven Hills, $20 -- Five red varieties combine to make a ripe berry wine with a good finish. Good with barbecued chicken or pork.
