It has long been rumored that the few rows of vines at the entrance to Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville, Wash., were required so the winery could be called a "chateau."
PROSSER -- Construction is expected to start soon on the next phase of what backers say will be the state's premier educational and promotional center for Washington's wines and food products.
The federal government has approved the Lake Chelan American Viticultural Area, making the region in north-central Washington the state's 11th appellation.
The 24,040-acre AVA is entirely within the Columbia Valley. It is home to 15 wineries and 260 acres of vineyards. Such grapes as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Malbec, Merlot and Syrah are planted in Lake Chelan.
Grapes have been grown in the area since 1891. In modern times, Steve Kludt and Bob Christopher replanted apple orchards to wine grape vineyards in 1998.
