Woehler on Wine: Latah Creek Winery

SPOKANE — Latah Creek Winery of Spokane started out offering bargain prices more than 25 years ago and has never strayed.

If you like well made, fruity and sometimes sweet wines, Latah Creek is for you. And they also make some excellent dry reds and whites.

Many are under $10 and almost all under $20.

Owner and winemaker Mike Conway has always had a bit of whimsy in crafting his wines, including several made from the Muscat grape. These include the dessert-style Moscato d'Latah; a Riesling laced with wild huckleberries and a German Maywine made from Riesling, woodruff herbs and strawberries.

Latah Creek Winery was established in 1982 by Conway in a small facility along Interstate 90 on the way to Coeur d'Alene. With his wife Ellena and daughter Natalie, they operated a winery worth visiting for wine and its gift shop.

Many Latah Creek wines can be found at local supermarkets or state liquor stores.

2007 Riesling, Washington state, $7-$9 -- Not too sweet, not too dry, crisp and fruity. Perfect with bratwurst.

Huckleberry d'Latah, nonvintage, Washington state, $7-$9 -- Delicious and a summer treat. Served chilled with a light summer meal such as salad and cold cuts.

2007 Spokane Blush, Washington state, $7-$9 -- A fruity, aromatic blend of Riesling, Chenin Blanc and Muscat Canelli. Try a chicken fruit salad with apples.

2007 Muscat Canelli, Washington state, $7-$9 -- Floral perfume aromas yield to sweet apples and melons. Pair with garlic shrimp.

Maywine, nonvintage, Washington state, $6-$8 -- Strawberries, herbs and Riesling are great as a summer spritzer with some sparkling water and a fresh strawberry in the glass.

2007 Sangiovese, Washington State, $8-$11 --A light, smooth Chianti-style dry red that's a good match for pizza.

2006 Merlot, Washington state, $14-$16 -- Easy-drinking and smooth with lots of cherries. Any grilled meat will do.

2005 Cabernet Syrah, Washington state, $18-$20 -- Good integration of the two grapes, spicy with dark berry fruit. A great accompaniment for roast pork loin.

2005 Natalie's Nectar, $14.99 -- This half-bottle very sweet red dessert wine is made from Syrah and should be served with cheese at the end of a meal.
