  • It has long been rumored that the few rows of vines at the entrance to Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville, Wash., were required so the winery could be called a "chateau."

Woehler on Wine: Trust Cellars, Bergevin Lane Vineyards

Trust Cellars and Bergevin Lane Vineyards are two modest Walla Walla wineries producing some outstanding wines at reasonable prices.

With more than 125 Walla Walla wineries now, it's difficult to keep up with all the labels. And I'm afraid to say some are listing prices in the $45 and above range with regularity.

Trust and Bergevin Lane have wines for under $20, as well as wines for $36 and more.

Trust is operated by Steve Brooks, a transplant from CNN in Atlanta who got the wine bug on a visit to the Walla Walla Valley and became a cellar worker at several wineries including Long Shadows Vintners.

His winery is tiny, but the wines are big and bursting with flavors.

Trust Cellars 2006 Riesling, Columbia Valley, $18 -- Getting wow reviews. Great aromas of peaches and oranges that blend with flavors of apricots and melons. Goes with scrambled eggs and a zesty salsa.

Trust 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, $36 -- Rated "Outstanding!" by Wine Press Northwest and offering huge aromas of blackberries and layers of flavors including cherry cola. Try with sliced-thin rare beef and some creamy horseradish on crusty fresh bread.

Bergevin winery was founded by Annette Bergevin and Amber Lane. Steffan Jorgensen, a native of Denmark, brings to the team experience in winemaking from France, Chile and Sonoma.

Behind the scenes is Gary Bergervin -- Annette's father -- who spends most of his time among the vines. He has been a director of Sandpiper Farms, the site of Canoe Ridge Vineyard, since 1972. He also was a founding partner of Canoe Ridge Vineyard in 1988.

The results of this interesting team are some novel and delicious blends.

Bergevin Lane Vineyards, 2007 Calico White, Columbia Valley $16 -- Rated "Outstanding!" by Wine Press Northwest, this is an aromatic and delicious tasting blend of Chardonnay, Roussanne and Viognier showcasing apples and citrus. If you can't find this vintage, look for the next. Great with scallops seared in olive oil.

Bergevin Lane 2005 Syrah, Columbia Valley, $26 -- Got a 90 point score from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. This tasty red offers earth and violet aromas with ripe jam berry flavors. Try with Italian-style meatballs smothered in tomatoes and parmesan.
